PROJECT 3
Reasoning
For project 3 I wanted to further expand on my short film process, but wanted to use this project as an opportunity to research other scripts and shots from good films to learn more about how it's done in the real world. To do this I annotated shots from three different films with information on why they are composed the way they are. In addition, I wrote three short pieces explaining the way the scripts were written and why.
ART
My annotations and script analysis were looking at the films Joker, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Interstellar. I wanted to really dive deep into these films because they all speak to me in interesting ways. For the annotations I not only observed and annotated what was seen on screen, but I also went out of my way to explain why certain shots were the way they are, and theorize for all the other details that weren't explained by members of the production team.
In the annotations specifically, I made sure to highlight composition topics like The Rule of Thirds, and other subtle hints to draw the viewers eye to a specific spot on screen. I also for some of the annotations took color and how we react emotionally to certain colors into account and made sure to note them. As one of the biggest things that impact and influence our emotional state is color.

Below are links to my analysis' to the films I studied, as well as short explanations as overview.
For Interstellar I took a look at a scene that nearly brings me to tears every time I see it. Cooper watching his kids grow up without him because he's in space. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E12o_Z72TIMo3l6_55XAOtI7s5cp8rC-2c38EPmYXeo/edit?usp=sharing |
I chose to look at the opening scene of Joker, because I believe it shows some of the most brutally honest and human emotions in any movie about a comic book character, which makes the film very unique. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AHihQJpB-QY1CgNA8etAAXDJJ72HINMYmAOY57ZaZic/edit?usp=sharing |
For ROTLA I chose everyone's favorite running from a boulder scene. This was because the script for this film has some of the most detailed descriptions for setting I've ever seen. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BT3n5AN9hvFp2rW-AwWsS3y87Ui5zLC-jXRaCTEhTPY/edit?usp=sharing |
